Photos and Reflections: New Haven Open – Day 9.

I’m back in Boston after spending the past ten days in New Haven, Connecticut, where I worked as the tournament photographer and videographer for the New Haven Open tennis tournament. Although this is a significantly smaller tournament relative to others I’ve worked in the past, the amount of work to be done, photos to be taken, and video content to be produced was no less than ever, so I’m just now finding the time to catch up on posting that work here.
Finals day is always crazy, but also always makes for great photo opportunities, and I was pleased to get some nice reaction images as Simona Halep stunned Petra Kvitova to win the singles championship and Sania Mirza and Jie Zheng took the doubles title.
Although the New Haven Open is a women’s only tournament, and the draw is smaller than some others on tour, there’s still tons of activity off the court that needed to be covered. My work often calls for shifting styles and working somewhere in the middle of journalism, marketing, and public relations, respectively, and this was no exception. Although I was on court shooting editorial photos of forehands, backhands, and serves, I was also shooting corporate events, tennis clinics, and sponsorship signage around the grounds, all aimed toward use for future marketing material. In that regard, these ten days served as a good experience for me in shooting for those different purposes simultaneously.
As usual, it was a nice opportunity to re-connect with old colleagues and friends, and to make new connections as well. It’s a pleasure to work alongside so many talented individuals, and I’m very lucky to do so on a daily basis, both in tennis and in baseball. I of course owe huge thanks to the team I was chosen to be a part of. Matt Van Tuinen and Jeff Watson of MVTPR and all-around media whiz Nick McCarvel do some seriously impressive work. It was also a great pleasure to work alongside Elsa Garrison, our old Boston Getty Images photo colleague turned New York staffer, out on court and at events throughout the week.
Although I won’t be able to shoot the US Open this year as I’ve done for the past two years, I’ll be keeping busy in Boston for the next couple of months, as the Red Sox are in the heat of a playoff chase that should come to an exciting ending.
Thanks for reading!

These are photos from the two semi-final matches at this year’s New Haven Open. Both were great matches with some nice opportunities for pictures.

This was another busy day which had me running every which way around the grounds. This is a quick bite of everything I shot on Day 7.

There wasn’t much time for me to shoot on-court action on Day 6. Instead, I was mostly occupied with off-court events, promotions, and corporate and sponsorship photos needed for the tournament.
These are a few that I did manage to get from the day’s tennis action.

I’m back in Boston now and finally finding the time to catch up on all my work from the New Haven Open at Yale. This is the first of several post to come, so I won’t type too much in each consecutive post until I get to the end of the tournament.

I don’t have much time to post, but I wanted to get this out to get caught up. These are just a few snaps from yesterday’s action at the New Haven Open.

Today was a relatively slow day for tennis action here in New Haven. It’s the calm before the storm, so to speak, so I won’t write much.
These are just a few images from the day.

I’m here in New Haven, Connecticut for the next ten days working as the tournament photographer and video producer at the 2013 New Haven Open tennis tournament. Today marked the first day of the tournament, so I was busy shooting tons of tennis and opening events. By now, I’ve learned that on these early days of the tournament, it’s less about being too creative with photo and video and more about making sure that everything gets covered, as there’s so much going on.
Above is a quick hit video piece I shot and edited from the tournament draw ceremony featuring 2013 Wimbledon finalist, Sabine Lisicki. As the tournament goes on, I’ll have more time to polish these video spots. For now, it was a good way to get back into the swing of things after shooting lots of baseball over the past several weeks.
There’s also a few selects from the stills I shot today.
As I often make my practice, I’m hoping to publish a post every day of the tournament, so be sure to check back if you’d like!

Earlier this week, I went down to New Haven, Connecticut to shoot promotional photos and video at a free tennis lesson event leading up to the New Haven Open professional women’s tennis tournament which I’m shooting this coming August.
Held on site at the Yale University Tennis Center, the 12th annual free tennis lesson day featured an appearance by the young, up-and-coming women’s tennis player, Taylor Townsend. Also in attendance were both Connecticut Governor, Dannel P. Malloy, and John DeStefano Jr., Mayor of New Haven.
Despite working both still photo and video simultaneously, the shoot went well, and Taylor was a fantastic subject to work with.
Lately, it seems my video work has fallen more on the side of promotional and advertising rather than straight journalism, and this video is a continuation of that trend. It’s interesting to see how the approach differs so greatly knowing that you’re shooting for marketing material instead of with a journalistic eye. I have to say, I enjoy both formats.
I’m looking forward to an exciting couple weeks in New Haven in August!

Here are photos from my final day of the 2016 Connecticut Open. The day concluded with the men’s legends event, which featured Connecticut local and former top 10 player, James Blake, and John McEnroe. It’s always great to work with these guys.
Now I’m back in Boston for more Red Sox baseball. I’m sad to be missing the final weekend in New Haven, but had a great time shooting for a great team full of very talented, hardworking individuals.
Until next time.
